In the March/April edition of Safeguard we pose three questions based on stories in the magazine. One of them is this:

WorkSafe CE Sharon Thompson is keen to find out why Australia's H&S performance is twice as good as ours.
If you have worked in Australia, what do you think the reason could be?

Feel free to respond here on the Forum, or privately here via a Survey Monkey form.

An edited selection of responses will be published in the May/June edition, but with no names attached. One randomly selected person will receive a prize, namely a copy of the book Random Noise: Measuring Your Company's Safety Performance, by Georgina Poole and Sidney Dekker.

I asked that question when I was presenting at a conference in NZ a few months ago. There were a couple of business owners in the audience who have business in both countries and they agreed that the regulators in Australia "don't take prisoners". If you are in breach of the regulations, you get slammed. There's no leniency. You will potentially loose your business if you don't keep your staff safe. One of them said his business in NZ is cheaper and easier to run for this reason. We supply organisations in both countries and there is a different level of maturity in regards to our little niche area for sure, and more money available to mitigate the critical risks. Quite telling really.
