  • Employing the hearing-impaired
    Hi Team.
We have in our team a lady who is totally deaf. She is an asset to our team as she picks up risks and hazards around the site, that are sometimes overlooked. We have lights that flash above doors for things like emergencies that are attached to the fire alarms.
I also engage with MSD to get funding annually for an interpreter for when we have our monthly meetings so she is part of the team, therefore not only does she know what the meeting items that are being discussed, but she can put forward her own discussion points at the same time. It's a help that she can also lip read.

  • The boundaries - a professional perspective
    Hi
If you are a member of NZISM, there was a webinar held yesterday presented by Grant Nicholson, who is a H&S Lawyer in NZ. The main discussion points were varied but a lot was said around the Whakaari eruption and those companies being held accountable and court proceedings. It was very informative. That session was recorded and will be up on their web page for members.

  • Safety Shoes
    Hi
All our employees that require safety footwear for their role are allocated 1 pair of shoes/boots a year. I do have certain criterias of shoes depending on their roles (such as no slip on boots for our technicians due to the amount of time they are getting in and out of vehicles). We have a capped value and if they want a certain pair of footwear over and above that amount, then they pay the difference (which doesn't happen that often). And No I would not ask for them back if they leave before the next annual allowance, they are most welcome to them

  • Occupational Health Monitoring - Employees Who Want to Opt Out
Our Annual Health Monitoring is also included in their contracts, and depending what department they work in the Health Monitoring tests are different.
We have had a couple of battles with some, so in this instance we ask them to produce a letter from their GP stating they are being monitored externally.

thanks for your help. There are a few out there, just need to find one to serve our purpose
  • Anybody out there involved in Educational H&S
    Hi Janet
My niece (she is 11 now) is extremely allergic to nuts, dairy, bees and wheat products, carries a Epi-pen with her at all times (we also have one on us at all times too). When she started pre-school they advised that there were no regulations around needing to have such thing on site and it was really put in the too hard basket with having a child with nut allergies.
When she started school, our family were very proactive to get some sort of programme going at the school (which goes up to year 13) to make sure my niece and others would be safe, so we engaged help from our local St.Johns and myself being HSE Advisor at the PTA and Board Meetings we educated the teachers about such conditions and how to use Epi-pens. When she started school there were still no regulations. But now any student that has extreme allergies or conditions, their photos are on a board in the sick bay with instructions on what to do in the event of an incident.
We have the same issue with my son who has Down Syndrome (he is now year 10) and there is nothing with the MOE that cover special needs - only polices and procedures that the school has put in place themselves.

totally agree with your statement about their response, sometimes not very helpful especially when you are asking for guidance or clarification.
