  • Support for innovation from HR
I disagree. I think that HR, HSE and L&D need to collaborate more in the areas of streamling and developing targeted inductions, wellbeing initiatives and builing leadership capability in regars to softer skills such as negotioantions, facilitation and team building
  • From compliance to care
There needs to be a balance between compliance and leading the organizational culture towards a more positive culture.

This does not mean throwing the baby out with the bath water. It's about reviewing what you have in place and see if there are any improvements or changes that need to made. Putting in more leading indicators than lag.

It's also about giving the operations team more accountability and building their capability to manage their own safety performance with HSE acting in the advisory, mentoring and coaching space.

More employee engagement and participation by envolving the employees, letting them take ownership and get on with the job,
  • Safety Audits - are they useful?
Just having participated in stage 1 and 2 of ISO 45001 certification audits I got some good learing points from this experience:

Conduct more mini audits. These templates need to be easy to use. Target group - management team during their walkabouts

Add what is done right to the audit report. During audits we tend to pick out all that is wrong which puts a very negative spin on it over time.

Do a better job of documenting verifiable evidence. Select 'non-conformance', write in relevant data and take pictures then select 'conformance' for better record keeping.

Develop audit tools are fit for purpose. Ensure that they reflect the criterea of the system the organization has in place to monitor them more effectvely
  • Safety Documentaion
    Hi Bruce

Actually not a bad idea. I audited one site that did something similar.

They had a white board that also had the contact information, hazards, risk and controls, inlcuding sign off section ect which was updated every morning at the tailgate meetings. All present took a photo on their phones to refer to. At the end of the day the photo was emailed to the company email address for record keeping purposes.

Good investigation technique for more indepth investigations
  • Incident Reporting Procedure
    Hi Catherine

I would make the following recommendations:
Establish a safety line that all incidents and near misses are reported to you
Format a simple event for that cane be used to report any event. You can classify them when you put them on a register
Use the Worksafe NZ duty holder review template for the investiagation as comprehaensive and no need to re-invent the wheel

  • Slushy machines: wasteful expenditure or justifiable intervention?
I would challenge those that have a issue with the steps taken to go the the floor and spend time in the environment, perform the same tasks and wear the uniforms as the staff. Walk a mile in another mans shoes to ensure that the opinions offered are informative and come from a place of knowledge rather than speculation.
  • A strange request
Problem is usaually the clients have not understanding of what is being implemented. When I was contracting and implementing systems they generally were accompanied by HSE training and worksops to build the capability of the staff and teach the staff where their accountabilities lie. The basics need to be covered such as overview of legislation, systems, incident management, risk management, contract management, employee participation and engagement and auditing. The client and the employees need to understand why they are using the system, what is the purpose of the information and what is it going to be used for. A system is as good as its usability.
  • New thinking in health & safety - community of practice
I would be interested in this. Always good to network and share ideas
  • Near Miss Reporting
At the weekly meetings or monthly meeting just ask if there were any near misses, minute and process accordingly. Sometimes easier to have one person on the site that does the data entry so they just verballr report it to that person. I find some staff don't like to be know so a suggestion box method works where they can put the near miss or hazard in a note and pop it in the box and the H&S Rep check it once a day. At one site the staff used to text the information through. Speak to the staff and see what options they prefer. Normally more than one approach works
  • The right to disconnect
I suppose it depends on the sitauation. As the HSE Manager I monitor the safety line which is 24/7. I take the calls as when inidents occur it is standard practice to call when incidents occur
  • Worker Participation and Engagement
