  • Two staff members - A Hypothetical Vaccine Discusion
Secondly, I disagree with putting any onus on 'swapping out' one worker over and above the other worker.
My advice would be for the workplace to conduct a risk assessment and consult with both workers on appropriate controls.
    Michelle Dykstra
I've been considering this, and am leaning the same way Michelle, as a strategy, swapping may well not be possible, or fair.
Negative air pressure zones, extraction and filtration systems would seem likely candidates to reduce risk of infection, as well as the default PPE of masks
  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
Announcement to crew of Roman galley, "Good news team this morning there will be extra rations for all- after lunch the captain wants to go water skiing"
  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
Worked with both Keith, with SCBA smoke pots were the incentive to get a seal, or the ingress of water if in a flooded compartment situation. Derek is correct that long term, a petroleum based product will degrade the rubber seal, but how long should they be used for in any case. Likewise, there can't be many situations where someone would have to wear any mask continuously throughout a day, even slaves get the odd break
  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
Hence the reason that you need to be clean shaven to wear disposable or reusable negative pressure respirators.Derek Miller
A little bit of Vaseline creates good seal for beard owners I found back in the day,Derek- worked fine with a gas mask on in a sealed chamber with CS gas canister activated to provide an incentive to achieve a good seal  An old Navy trick.
  • What is PPE?
In this Abseiling ASG, there are references to personal equipment that would protect the user. It's not an extensive list though - I'm not sure if that exists.Alex P

Excellent reference Alex, Riki take a look at the Worksafe Best Practice Guide On Industrial Rope Access too, between them you should have the information you are after, but every business should develop it's own PPE list for the activities it carries out, based on it's hazard/risk identification process for its specific situation/locations etc.

  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
I ended up shaving mine off during lockdown (and have regretted it ever since) but it makes the masks fit better.Michael Wilson

Not so much for disposable masks, but for Breathing Apparatus and Gas Masks, a little bit of Vaseline creates good seal for beard owners, I found back in the day, Michael.
  • Who is a PCBU
Maybe if you reframed the question slightly Stuart, are you talking ultimate liability for a situation/workplace, or responsibility for informing or cooperating with other PCBUs that might be affected by the large company?
  • Lone Worker Devices
A reasonable suggestion Teena, but the OP doesn't want to use mobile phones/apps that would scoff up personal data or require a mobile free individual being given a mobile phone.
  • Who is a PCBU
Ultimately, the company's board of Directors and devolving down through divisions to local branch level. So day to day, Manager of the local site/branch, no satisfaction/improvement, take it up the chain till you hit the button that works.
  • Lone Worker Devices
Where do these workers normally do their thing Sharon? their employers premises, static sites, city locations remote sites? Seems a big ask for minimal outlay, is this the kind of device you have in mind? Seniors Alarm
  • Hazard/Risk Evaluation and Prioritisation
A couple of tweaks I would suggest Keith, Electricity has the worst consequence as being serious injury, surly that should be death. Likewise power tool use, if it goes totally wrong when using an angle grinder, death can be the consequence (there have been several cases in New Zealand).

I think you may have Fire under weighted also, on average there is a fire a week on business premises, and while for the most part they don't kill people directly, they frequently spell the end of the business concerned.
  • Is Totika Prequalification being adopted?
The modus operandi of a certain large construction/building materials supply company, generally wise to keep those decisions as far away from accountants and procurement officers as posible.
, or also to consider where a contractor might be trying the old construction industry game of making their bid at a level they thought it would take to win a contract, then hoping to make up the difference in exceptionsSheri Greenwell

  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
Fogging of glasses is a bit of a giveaway that either the mask is being worn incorrectly, incorrect fit, or the wearer has a beard.

Seems to me that engineering an increase in air changes will do more. Likewise, where someone is isolating at home, setting up a negative pressure zone for the isolatee, would give some measure of protection for the other folk in their bubble. The Asbestos Removal industry could advise/do this.

Negative air pressure zones could be set up in some workplaces to keep work bubbles separated too.
  • Use of Mini-SDSs
Technically both Matt and Keith are correct Brendon, though 2.11 Clause 3 allows for the use of a condensed version of the key information.

    Keith's closing statement is pertinent, but you are dealing with a North American company, where getting it wrong is a recipe for winding up in court defending a multi million dollar lawsuit and in ChemWatch's blurb, they state;
    "Alerts and Reports

Receive email notifications about the status of your SDS- these updates include a ‘redness report’ for quick identification of exact changes in the SDS so you can compare to the previous version and update your safety procedures and any physical SDS folders accordingly".

So it would seem likely that their service could reasonably relied upon, and I can see the attraction of outsourcing this. I also like the way they present the information, and I assume they can supply versions in other languages if required (and depending on the make up of your companies work force), make your call but consider Keith's caveat.
  • A landlord's H&S Policy
    WorkSafe NZ's take:
A business can have influence and control over health and safety matters through:

    • Control over work activity: a business in control of the work activity may be in the best position
to control the health and safety risks.
    • Control of the workplace: a business who has control over the workplace, including plant and
structures in the workplace, has some influence and control over health and safety matters relating
to work carried out by another business.
    • Control over workers: a business has more influence and control over its own workers and
contractors than those of another business.

A business with more influence and control (and the greatest share of the responsibilities) will usually be in the best position to manage the associated risks.(the tenant surly)

A business with less influence and control may fulfill their responsibilities by making arrangements with the business with more influence and control.(the Landlord?)

On a day to day basis, with respect to a single tenanted building, the Landlord cannot do more than ask to be given a copy of the tenant's H&S system etc, and as for the tenant not being able to use their own equipment without the prior authorization of the Landlord, get a grip on reality

    Déjà vu anyone?

  • Prequal
Ahhhhhhhh, Prequal Schemes, one of the things I thank God daily for not having to waste my time with any more. Would it be fair to say that Construction Health and Safety New Zealand (CHASNZ), is a Site Safe on steroids with the aim of creating one prequal to rule them all?
