The ruling confirms the requirement in AS/NZS 1715 that all close (tight) fitting respiratory protection (masks) including powered (PAPR) and supplied air require the wearer to be clean shaven, i.e. PAPR and supplied tightfitting facepieces are not suitable for those with facial hair.

Fit testing for tight fitting powered and supplied air respirators is to be conducted whilst under negative pressure, e.g. with the device turned off and the wearer must pass the test in negative mode before using.

Loose fitting headtops for PAPR and supplied air such as hoods and helmets do not require fit testing and are suitable for people with facial hair where the hair is completely captured within the headpiece.
