  • WorkSafe: should it stick to its knitting?
I am still waiting for the effects of the NZIPS to kick in. Fingers crossed.
  • Reluctance to Shave - Risk to Health
Almost broke Godwin's law and pointed out a famous person who shaved his mustache to fit a gas mask after being order to by his superiors.

  • Frivolous Friday Mk2 AKA The Dead Horse?
Correct. Someone was asked to make some bracket and put this on the wall. You need to unscrew the bracket to remove it. He did it for two different items. It would have been tricky to to do.

Challenge: What is wrong with this picture?
  • Blaming or learning?
I agree. When a Manager blames "idiots" for an incident it is an indicator that there a is a problem with recruitment, supervision, training or a combination of both.

If we blame one person it can often be used as a way to hide other system or culture failures.
  • Covid vaccination - can it be required on H&S grounds?
I feel the best result would be achieved with adding more layers of cheese.

    1. Vaccine
    2. Distancing
    3. Sanitiser
    4. Other sanitation
    5. Reduced travel
    6. Testing
    7. Work from home flexibility

Now a lot of these are just good ideas even without Covid.
  • No jab, no job?
Did today's announcement of the traffic light system change your business plans?

It has raised a few questions which will need some work.

How will you undertake in person tertiary training for unvaccinated staff members?
Do you have staff who attend trade events which will require vaccinations?
Do you have internal awards nights etc with more than 50 people?
Will your Christmas party be more than 50 people?

These are not questions just for the year but going forward.
  • No jab, no job?
A death of a staff member would destroy morale.
A sick staff member would mean a full shutdown, brand damage, customer relationship damage, ability for staff to earn a living etc.
  • No jab, no job?
The same could be said for drug testing, hearing, acc claims history etc. We need to ensure that we are not putting people at risk unnecessarily. If staff are at risk of infection then having those with the lowest risks makes sense. Imagine the impact on a workplace if an unvaccinated staff member was allowed onsite and ended up catching COVID. An asymptomatic vaccinated staff member who infected them would be devastated. Instead if a PCBU selects staff that are the least likely to get infected in the same way that you pick those who are most likely to be able to lift heavy objects.
  • No jab, no job?
Any airconditioned office where people are unmasked.
Any industry where you need to work closely with someone.

    Q. What is blue and is not heavy.
    A. Light blue
  • No jab, no job?
At a recent Safety Forum I asked the WorkSafe representative for worksafe's position. As some office based companies were taking this step does that show that it is reasonably practical?

After umming and arring, the standard line of do a risk assessment came out.

As a single covid case means a shut down of the office, brand damage and most importantly the risk of long term illness or death for staff and the risk of transmission in an airconditioned office is high. Surely any company could argue that it was a reasonable step.

If anyone has their risk assessment that they would be keen to share that would be great to see hat decision you came to.

I just heard a major accounting firm is having vaccine mandates in their New Zealand offices. This will be interesting to see.

  • Mask wearing for COVID at expense of other risks
I have found disposable masks are much worse than fabric ones at fogging glasses. They also work better for bearded fellows. I ended up shaving mine off during lockdown (and have regretted it ever since) but it makes the masks fit better.

The next question would be why would you send out lone workers without a cellphone?
